MEC Renews Support of IMBA Canada's Take a Kid Mountain Biking Program

August 20, 2014 - IMBA members and supporters around the world will celebrate the eleventh-annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day (TKMBD) on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014. The event, developed and coordinated by IMBA, encourages communities around the world to join together and ride mountain bikes with kids. Last year, more than 15,000 participants joined events at hundreds of locations across the globe, including Canada, Australia, the USA, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico and South Africa. Informal or formal, with one child or one hundred, TKMBD events celebrate the joy of riding in nature.

For the second year in a row, IMBA Canada is excited to partner with Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), as the presenting sponsor of the Canadian Take a Kid Mountain Biking program. A long-time supporter of IMBA Canada's mission, MEC looks to inspire its members and all Canadians to get outside and get active.

“We’re proud that MEC’s partnership with the International Mountain Bicycling Association helped support over 30 events across Canada last year," said David Labistour, CEO of MEC. "Enabling youth to experience mountain biking is directly in line with MEC’s mission to inspire and support everyone who wants to lead active outdoor lifestyles.”

TKMBD is an annual celebration held on the first Saturday of October, but with MEC's support, IMBA Canada aims to grow the program and make every day Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.

"We hope every cycling club, community, youth group and family will make time to take a kid mountain biking this year, and register their event on" said Lora Woolner, IMBA Canada Director. "The power is in the numbers, and we want to see more of our youth on bikes."

A grassroots celebration of play on two wheels, TKMBD events range in size and scope from community-wide festivals to neighbourhood outings hosted by a couple of families. Registration is now open to feature your event on the calendar and map, and receive a care kit with bike schwag from MEC.
