We have a saying at IMBA, "great trails build communities, and communities build great trails."

As Trail Care Crew, frequently working with exceptional people building great singletrack, we often witness the latter half of this statement, but sometimes forget that trails themselves bring people together.

If you are like me, you've been spending tons of time on the saddle, exploring new trails, loving old favourites and enjoying many great rides with friends.

I hope that you can take a few minutes out of your busy ride schedule to think ahead to the fall and the annual Take A Kid Mountain Biking Event. The official day is on Saturday October 5, 2013, but we already have many events planned in the weeks leading up to the 5th.  It's time to share the love with kids in your community and IMBA Canada is here to help make it easy for you.

I was at the Parks Canada “Learn to Camp’ event earlier on Saturday, June 22nd, but knew that I couldn’t miss visiting friends and racers taking part in the 24 HRS Summer Solstice event.  So off I went to see the Chico boys up at Albion Hills Conservation Area!

This was IMBA Canada’s second “Learn to Camp” event in conjunction with Joyride150 and the Guelph Off Road Bicycling Association (GORBA) and what a great day!  Ok, let me point out that it rained in the morning while we were setting up, and then off and on during the afternoon, but there was no stopping the participants from sharing their enthusiasm and joining the fun at the ‘Learn to MTB’ portion of the event that we were hosting!

After a spell of never ending spring weather, the anticipation of a major cycling event at the stunning Christie Lake Conservation Area (CLCA), was more than enough to get cyclists excited.  The staff of MEC-Burlington and the volunteers from Hamilton Cycling Club (HCC) did not disappoint with MEC Bikefest! We were treated to some well executed programming that included a morning trail build, guided rides, clinics, yoga, and even a track-stand contest!

There are a myriad of kid friendly events happening across Canada every day!

With the generous support of MEC, our Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day coordinator Deanne Lazaruk has been able to put together an interactive map that links you directly to events happening across Canada so it's easier for you to find out more information on the events near you.

We are encouraging clubs, groups, event planners to get in touch with us with your event information so that we can add it to our map. Check back often as we will be posting events on a regular basis.

It can be very challenging for trail builders and land managers to strike a balance between trail experiences for beginner or novice users, all the way to experienced users seeking wilderness.

Factor in rugged terrain (like our experience building beginner mountain bike trails in Abbotsford, BC) and it can create a very difficult situation for trail builders to offer green-level singletrack.

Setting goals - and seeing them through - is no easy feat. Are you a head in the clouds, long-term planner? Or maybe a short-term, master of to do lists?

It can be hard to strike a balance, and even more difficult to manage short and long term goals. Even more difficult when you're talking about the future of an organization, or a trail network.

On March 9th, the second annual Winterbike took place at Kingdom Trails in East Burke, VT. Home of one of the greatest trail networks in the northeast, the Kingdom Trails now offers year-round activities for bicyclists on their vast network of shared trails. From the Nordic Center, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, hikers and mountain bikers enjoy many miles of shared trails. Down in the village, on Darling Hill, the locals are also packing down single track for winter use.

MEC TO SUPPORT TAKE A KID DAY THROUGHOUT 2013

IMBA Canada believes that Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day can be much more than just one day on the calendar each year. To achieve this goal, we’ve partnered with Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) for 2013! Together we intend to make each and every day Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day.
