ACTION ALERT: Clearcut logging threatens trails in Calgary-region

Extensive clearcut logging is slated to take place this summer in the West Bragg Creek region of Kananaskis Country, which would see the destruction of over 700 hectares of trees, and 90% of recreational trails in the region. Map.

According to Sustain Kananaskis, a grassroots initiative made up of Bragg Creek and Calgary residents, the proposed logging will have an extremely detrimental impact on the trails, watershed, and the environment, but also to the more than 1 million Albertans who recreate in Kananaskis Country.

IMBA Canada is urging all trail users to take part in the ongoing public consultation process, by signing Sustain Kananaskis' online petition which is calling for "...a full, complete, facilitated public consulatation process on the intended clear cut operation..." Residents of Alberta should write to their MLA, the Premier's office, or Alberta Sustainable Resources Development to speak on behalf of mountain bikers, and trail users in the region.

An open house is scheduled for Thursday, January 26, 2012 at the Bragg Creek Community Centre, from 3:00 - 7:00 pm.
