As the pressure on many of our beloved trail networks increases, so do requirements for scheduled maintenance and trail related amenities like parking, washrooms, kiosks, appropriate signage and garbage cans. This in turn presents its own set of challenges for the grassroots volunteer organization that is typically quarterbacking management of that very same local trail network.

Two weeks ago we hosted our first of three integrated land manager training workshops sponsored by Shimano Canada in Kelowna, BC. What followed were two days of workshops both in the classroom and in the field, but even more than the information gained were the fantastic connections made and conversations had between various different agencies and partners throughout the visit. The two-day workshop had 12 attendees from many different organizations represented. City of Kelowna, Rec. Sites and Trails BC, Big White and Parks Canada were all represented to name a few.

This past weekend saw our second Trail Care Crew Workshop of the year take place in Chilliwack, BC with the Fraser Valley Mountain Bikers Association (FVMBA).  The workshop saw 12 eager participants with varying degrees of previous build experience attend and all were eager to learn and put in some great work using new techniques learned during the in-class portion.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of providing a Trail Building School to my local club, the Tri Cities Off Road Cycling Association (TORCA). More often than not, when working with clubs in Canada, I'm not often a local trail user to begin with, so It was nice to have some more local knowledge and context of what the club was looking to accomplish and how the trail project fit within the overall vision of the trail network.

Kelowna might just be the spot you will want to live in 5 years. An incredible amount of riding is on tap in the area; from XC loops through incredible scenery to advanced technical trails that challenge every rider. Behind these trails stands Mountain Bikers of the Central Okanagan (MTBco), a group of dedicated volunteers who are set on building Kelowna into a true riding destination. With support from local landmanagers, a great canvas, and a strong trails organization, Kelowna (and West Kelowna) is sure to grow and thrive as a trail centre.

Williams Lake, BC and the Mountain Bike Tourism Symposium was our latest stop in our 2015 Trail Care Crew season, and like all the others, the southern Chilcotin town and visit did not disappoint!

Williams Lake was the host city for the 2015 MTB Tourism Symposium held Oct. 02-04. This is the third instalment since the Mountain Bike Tourism Association began organizing these summits of First Nations, land managers, tourism operators, bike clubs and advocates for the sport. One hundred and fifty delegates convened for a wide variety of workshops and keynote speeches over the three days.

Banff, Canada's oldest and likely most iconic national park, has a special place in the heart of many Canadians. It has the reputation to inspire and instill a sense of awe in any who visit. Wether you climb one of its many mountain peaks or just view the scenery from the townsite, it's likely you will leave with a heightened appreciation for the rocky mountains.
