Sprockids

This past weekend our Trail Care Crew Coordinator Deanne Lazaruk attended the Sprockids Fun Day in Gibsons, BC. The celebration was organized by students of Capilano University's Mountain Bike Operations Program in honor of Doug Detwiller, the founder of the Sprockids park and program.

Despite the slightly rainy weather over 250 people attended the event. Kids of all ages were out on bikes playing in the skills area and taking in some of the guided rides that the students hosted.

Arguably one of, if not the very first community bike park in Canada (if not North America), Sprockids Park is a testament to the amazing riding community that resides on the Sunshine Coast.

Over the wet West Coast winter I sat down with 65 applications, a 2012 calendar, and a large map of Canada and started plotting out the 2012 Trail Care Crew schedule.

Environmental impacts of users on trails continues to be a hot topic in many regions. During the past five to seven years there has been a flurry of research papers on trail use and environmental impact for all user groups. The fact of the matter is any user on a trail has some impact on the environment. However, it is baffling that statements are still made that go against all credible research regarding the extent of the impact each user has.

We've all been there: riding on a great trail system for the first time – its got great flow, sweet technical sections, and you're having a blast.

But where the heck are you? Do you go right, or left at that fork ahead?

Signage (or lack-thereof) can make or break a ride.

I was forwarded this email from Troy Delfs, a resident of Bragg Creek, just SW of Calgary. Troy, along with other members of the Greater Bragg Creek Trail Association [GBCTA], has been pouring his heart and soul into developing a trail system in Kananaskis Country in the West Bragg Creek area. In 2011 alone, 30 km of singletrack was developed and another 15 km of trail is slated to be built in 2012. Now, Spray Lakes Sawmills wants to log the forest, directly affecting many of the singletrack and XC ski trails in the area. Please read on to see what Troy has to say...

Greetings IMBA members. Hope everyone had a safe, fun-filled holidays and is settling into their respective winter activities while preparing for the snow to melt and trails to open once more. While waiting I thought I’d take some time to get you up to speed on all the work that IMBA Canada’s Trail Solutions program has had the privileged of being involved in through the seasons of 2011.
