In the early 1920s, Upper Canada College acquired land in the small village of Norval, just outside Georgetown, ON, with hopes to relocate their boarding school to the country. But in the years following the First World War, expansion was out of the question. Rather than relocate the entire school to Norval, the Board decided to keep the property as a field centre to cultivate the boys' outdoor education. For many decades after, students travelled to Norval to camp, learn survival skills, and plant trees.

It seems that some of the ridership in and around Fundy National Park have been a bit keen to ride the new White Tail trail that was designed in August of last year. As it stands, it is only a design and has not seen the upgrades / reroutes necessary for the trail to be deemed suitable for multi-use. Until such time, White Tail will remain a hiking ONLY trail.

education

This past weekend saw Daniel Scott head back to central Ontario to teach a new group of students about the fundamentals of trail design. Over the course two days students were bombarded with as much information as possible whilst being quizzed repeatedly by our resident Trail Solutions staffer. Using a variety of slides, chalkboard drawings and anecdotal information, the class was prepared for a beautiful sunny afternoon of inclinometer work, flagging and assessment in the local green space, Ken Reid Conservation Area.

With the off-road handcycle trail project underway at the Wascana Provincial Recreation Site it became apparent to Parks that there was a lot more potential for trail recreation. As a result of IMBA Canada’s work (both with the Trail Care Crew and Trail Solutions) the Province requested that we be retained to expand on the handcycle trail plan and develop a full trails masterplan for the site.

Following the month of design work in Corner Brook, dialogue was initiated between various interested parties in western Newfoundland. The focus of much of these discussions was on expanding the trail offerings outside of the City and highlighting other terrain in the area.

For those who are familiar with Gros Morne National Park, it is one of the post card parks within Canada due to its dramatic landscapes complete with ocean shorelines, mountains and classic Newfoundland bog.
