I'm happy to announce that my glossy, print edition of ITN Canada has arrived in the mail! This season's edition includes coverage of the IMBA World Summit in Santa Fe, profiles of this year's X-Fusion Trail Ambassadors, and info on IMBA's new mapping program.

Current members receive the ITN:Canada in print, but it is also available online through Issuu.

As always, if you have content suggestions for future issues, please rachael [dot] raven [at] imba [dot] com (get in touch). Happy reading!

Last weekend, in my capacity as IMBA Canada's Quebec Coordinator, I attended a meeting in Sutton in the eastern townships. A group of bicyclists and trail users met in order to form a trail association. The goal is to organize and propose a network of trails in the area. Sutton has a great reputation amongst outdoor enthousiasts for hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter but the bicyclists hope that they can put together a proposal to have trails designated for mountain biking as well as a few new trails in the area.

When we think about the sustainability of trails, we often talk about how they have a low impact on the environment, or how they are environmentally friendly. Sometimes we overlook the fact that a sustainable trail also considers how people use the trail in order to manage risk and ensure they have a good time.

Such was the case for our visit in Wakefield, QC. With a particularly challenging sideslope – often reaching 50% – gaining elevation was quite hard on both users and the environment.

By the blank stares we received when we used the term 'TLC' in our Trail Building School presentation, we now know that the phrase TLC doesn't translate well into French.

But sometimes that's exactly what a trail needs (tender loving care).

We all love to dream up ideas for a new trail, or a new line off some cool rock feature – well at least us geeks at IMBA do – but sometimes you need to spend some time giving new life to a tired old trail. And, yes, even sustainably-built trails need some maintenance.

We often hear that sustainable trails are too easy. Or not fun.

The majority of trail builders we meet are advanced riders, and they often want to build trails at their (or their riding buddies') level.
