As the pressure on many of our beloved trail networks increases, so do requirements for scheduled maintenance and trail related amenities like parking, washrooms, kiosks, appropriate signage and garbage cans. This in turn presents its own set of challenges for the grassroots volunteer organization that is typically quarterbacking management of that very same local trail network.

On June 7th, Mount Revelstoke National Park celebrated its centennial with the second annual “Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day” at the Nels Nelsen Historic Area in the park.

The RCMP, Flowt, and Parks Canada provided a jam-packed day for families with a children’s bicycle skills and obstacle course, bike and helmet checks, stickers, prizes, draws, bike information and refreshments. The event was a huge success with sunny skies and perfect temperatures.

IMBA Canada Trail Care Crew leaders AJ Strawson and Rachael Raven wrap up their time on the road and say goodbye!

For the past year and a half, AJ and I have travelled all across the country - visiting all of Canada's beautiful and unique provinces (plus the Yukon!), riding our bikes, building trails, and spreading the word about how mountain biking and singletrack make our communities better places to live.

Though we haven't lived in Ottawa for a few years, rumours about the great trails at Mont Ste Marie have travelled far and wide. So, when we heard that we'd be paying a visit to Velo MSM, Rachael and I were excited to finally see what was going on!

Our first day began with a group ride to check out the work they had been doing. With a few paid trailbuilders (thanks to multiple grants) they have put considerable effort into a blue level climbing trail to get to the top of the hill.

If you are like me, you've been spending tons of time on the saddle, exploring new trails, loving old favourites and enjoying many great rides with friends.

I hope that you can take a few minutes out of your busy ride schedule to think ahead to the fall and the annual Take A Kid Mountain Biking Event. The official day is on Saturday October 5, 2013, but we already have many events planned in the weeks leading up to the 5th.  It's time to share the love with kids in your community and IMBA Canada is here to help make it easy for you.

There are a myriad of kid friendly events happening across Canada every day!

With the generous support of MEC, our Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day coordinator Deanne Lazaruk has been able to put together an interactive map that links you directly to events happening across Canada so it's easier for you to find out more information on the events near you.

We are encouraging clubs, groups, event planners to get in touch with us with your event information so that we can add it to our map. Check back often as we will be posting events on a regular basis.

On March 9th, the second annual Winterbike took place at Kingdom Trails in East Burke, VT. Home of one of the greatest trail networks in the northeast, the Kingdom Trails now offers year-round activities for bicyclists on their vast network of shared trails. From the Nordic Center, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, hikers and mountain bikers enjoy many miles of shared trails. Down in the village, on Darling Hill, the locals are also packing down single track for winter use.
