Over the wet West Coast winter I sat down with 65 applications, a 2012 calendar, and a large map of Canada and started plotting out the 2012 Trail Care Crew schedule.

We've all been there: riding on a great trail system for the first time – its got great flow, sweet technical sections, and you're having a blast.

But where the heck are you? Do you go right, or left at that fork ahead?

Signage (or lack-thereof) can make or break a ride.

ep·ic adj \ˈe-pik\ : extending beyond the usual or ordinary especially in size or scope.

One word to describe the 2011 Trail Care Crew season; epic. Thirty two official visits, 9 provinces, 290 days on the road and over 50,000 kms travelled. We drove through snowstorms, a hurricane, a tropical storm and endured a heatwave. We started the season digging into frozen ground, we finished the season in a wind storm.

Our Trail Care Crew travels across the country, meeting with clubs like yours each weekend, providing free training on trail building, and having an awesome time along the way.

Has you club applied to host the Trail Care Crew in 2012 yet?

Visits are free for IMBA member clubs and shops (club membership costs only $50). But hurry, the deadline for online applications is Tuesday, November 15th at Midnight EST.

I'm happy to report that the remainder of the IMBA Canada Trail Care Crew's 2011 schedule has been confirmed!

Chad and Deanne are currently working in Atlantic Canada -- with stops in New Brunswick and Newfoundland -- and will travel back through Quebec and Ontario in September.

The Crew will celebrate Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day October 1-2 in Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, then give workshops in Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, and in Calgary, AB.

August 31, 2011 is the NEW deadline to submit your online nomination form for the 2011 IMBA Canada X-Fusion Trail Ambassador Awards!

We're looking for two advocates -- one from eastern and western Canada -- who go above and beyond for their club.  The sort of person who does more for advocacy and trail maintenance than everyone else combined.

Cycling is growing across the globe as fuel prices rise across North America. People are rediscovering bikes as transportation: It's fun, it's cheap and it helps the environment by taking cars off the congested roads. Every transportation agency is investing in cycling to help cater the rising demands for quality infrastructures. Bike paths, bike lanes, cycletracks, sharrows and bicycle boulevards are paving the ways for cyclists to get around. But what if we included natural surfaced trails into our transportation planning?

Opened just last month, the IMBA-designed Valmont Bike Park in Boulder, Colorado, is an awesome example of how mountain biking facilities can be integrated into communities, much the same as soccer fields or hockey rinks.

Trip to Boulder anyone?
