A visit to British Columbia’s beautiful west coast is always eye opening to those of us that reside in the eastern interior.  The Trail Care Crew’s first 2014 visit to a Parks Canada location was the stunning Gulf Islands National Park.  As part of the week, the TCC met with the Asset Crew to go through the Sustainable Trail Building School training, and see that theory put into practice on a small section of trail.  The TCC looks forward to the potential of developing more sustai

Real summer weather and a cycling celebration, you bet, and MEC Burlington’s Bikefest was the best of both.  The hot and humid conditions on June 29th were made manageable by the great shoreline breezes coming off of L. Ontario into Hamilton’s Confederation Park, the site for this year’s event.

I was at the Parks Canada “Learn to Camp’ event earlier on Saturday, June 22nd, but knew that I couldn’t miss visiting friends and racers taking part in the 24 HRS Summer Solstice event.  So off I went to see the Chico boys up at Albion Hills Conservation Area!

This was IMBA Canada’s second “Learn to Camp” event in conjunction with Joyride150 and the Guelph Off Road Bicycling Association (GORBA) and what a great day!  Ok, let me point out that it rained in the morning while we were setting up, and then off and on during the afternoon, but there was no stopping the participants from sharing their enthusiasm and joining the fun at the ‘Learn to MTB’ portion of the event that we were hosting!

After a spell of never ending spring weather, the anticipation of a major cycling event at the stunning Christie Lake Conservation Area (CLCA), was more than enough to get cyclists excited.  The staff of MEC-Burlington and the volunteers from Hamilton Cycling Club (HCC) did not disappoint with MEC Bikefest! We were treated to some well executed programming that included a morning trail build, guided rides, clinics, yoga, and even a track-stand contest!

What a great night with my ol’ crew in Guelph! It never ceases to amaze me that mountain bikers are such a festive bunch, especially when they’re amongst good friends and fellow riders.

Vice President of GORBA, Tim Crosby, going through the agenda.

What were they celebrating at GORBA’s Annual General Meeting?  Only 20 years of mountain bike advocacy and a long list of successes!

3...2...1...the doors open and IMBA Canada Staff are ready to go!

It’s the annual hussle and bussle of this event that spells springtime for me, one because we get the opportunity to see a great number of likeminded people, the other, because we are passionate about riding bikes and like to see if we can score a few last minute deals before the upcoming season.

Since 2005, the Durham Mountain Biking Association (DMBA) has, without a doubt, been one of the primary advocates for the mountain biking community in southern Ontario.  The DMBA have focused their mountain biking advocacy efforts in and amongst the Durham Region, not only to retain access to trails, but also to develop new sustainable riding opportunities.  Their success can be attributed to strong leadership, a dedicated volunteer group of 450 members and a positive relationship with their land manager.
