They seem to go hand in hand: every chance we have, we pack the car, load up the bikes and head out for a couple days of mountain biking, and, most of the times, it involves camping. Living in Montreal, my girlfriend and I cross the border frequently to ride Vermont’s Green Mountains. We're always amazed that most of the state parks we visit offer great multi-use trails, and the opportunity to ride deep into the wilderness. Its also quite common to find state parks that are working with their local mountain biking clubs to improve trails and build new ones.

Cycling is growing across the globe as fuel prices rise across North America. People are rediscovering bikes as transportation: It's fun, it's cheap and it helps the environment by taking cars off the congested roads. Every transportation agency is investing in cycling to help cater the rising demands for quality infrastructures. Bike paths, bike lanes, cycletracks, sharrows and bicycle boulevards are paving the ways for cyclists to get around. But what if we included natural surfaced trails into our transportation planning?

New trails

Last week, i attended the grand opening of Mont-Rigaud. Located less then one hour outside of Montreal, the ski hill is now offering 10km of mountain bike specific trails. The resort invested 100k$ this year to get there and the building of trails started as soon as the resort closed off it's trails for skiing! Sentier Boréal was hired for every step of the way: they delivered Mont Rigaud with 10km of singletrack and a pumptrack and skills area.
