While we were prepping our project in Nipigon, Ontario one of the long time residents and trail advocates stopped in to see what we were up to. He was impressed at how Chad was swinging Heidi the hoe and at the style of trail we were constructing. During our conversation he asked us “How much do you guys get paid per foot?” After considering his question he answered for us. “You get paid by every happy foot that travels along your trail”.

We generally have a sense of what we will encounter at each of our visits. We meet the trail champions of the community, we explore some trail, we engage the volunteers and a new trail is created. Working with the Forgotten Trails Association wasn't much different except that our volunteers exceeded our expectations.

Located at the very tip of the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec, Forillon National Park was created in 1970. Like all of Canada's national parks, it is home to amazing terrain and scenery. Most of the trails in the park are either old roads or were created in the early years of the park. Forillon is home to a section of the International Appalachian Trail, has a couple of family friendly cycling trails and an entirely different winter trail network.

We were absolutely thrilled to find out we were returning to Corner Brook this year. Last summer we made an unofficial stop in the city and saw the potential to build a world class network in the area. After a meeting with some key officials from the city and provincial tourism, Peter Ollerhead from Cycle Solutions initiated the formation of the West Coast Mountain Bike Association (WCMBA).

Mountain bike clubs always ask us, “How can I convince my land manager/municipality that mountain biking is a good thing and that we should not be simply tolerated but accepted?” Once you enter into the world of mountain biking it's easy to understand why so many people love it. So how do you convert the non-believers?

We've done visits across this country in both big cities and towns with populations smaller than 150. The thing about trails is that it doesn't matter where you are, most places have at least one trail, if not an entire network. This is what we discovered in Memramcook, New Brunswick.

When people go to visit Mont Tremblant they generally visit the resort and not the actual town. Tucked a few kilometres away from the big Intrawest resort, which is Whistler's french cousin, the town of Mont Tremblant is filled with charm. As soon as we arrived we discovered the bike shop/sandwich bar/cafe located next door to the Resto-Pub on the busiest corner in town. Every second car carried bikes and the rental fleet outside the bike shop was well stocked.

There is no better way to spend a weekend than hanging out with friends, riding your bikes, watching bike movies and drinking cold beer. These are the good times that Canadians dream about all winter long. This was what over 550 mountain bikers did this past weekend at the Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ontario at the first annual Ontario Mountain Bike Festival.
